To me, this project was a soap box of sorts. I have never blogged before, and though possibly no one other than my instructor read this blog I felt like this was an awesome way to express my opinions and feelings on social issues. I believe I chose issues that were relevant to me and affected me in some way. This made it easy and fun to write about.
The posting on food and how factory farming effects our health and the health of America was a great post to write. Over the course of my (9 semester and no degree) college career I have studied this subject in many classes and as I gained information, I have begun to feel very passionate about it. So much so that a few years ago I became a vegetarian. I enjoyed doing more research on the topic and displaying some of the horrible and fascinating facts I have found over the years.
As a preschool teacher, you can imagine that education and school systems are very important to me. The children I support today will be a part of the school system tomorrow. It can be disheartening to work so hard to support their learning and then watch them become a number in the system once they start public school. Watching the documentary,"Waiting For Superman" was emotional for me. It highlighted so many issues that parents and teacher feel powerless about.
Equality and discrimination was an important post for me as well. I hate to say it blatantly but in North Idaho, we are not very racially diverse. I think we have a bad rap when it comes to racism in North Idaho because of some of the Aryan presence and Richard Butler. I don't know a whole lot of people who are racist but there are a lot of people who haven't seen very many people of other cultures. The first time I saw a black person in person, I was 12 years old. I think it is important to educate our children about things like this that they are aware, even if they don't experience exposure to other cultures.
This project was a gateway to me for blogging in the future. We live in an age of technology that supports this expression and sometimes the principle of this freedom alone makes me want to exercise it. I am thankful that I had this opportunity and I intend to pursue this in the future.
